Nor-Tech exhibits new Portable Clusters at SPE ATCE '08 Denver , CO, USA—September 22, 2008 — Nor-Tech will be introducing two new models of the award-winning Portable Cluster at the Society of Petroleum Engineers' Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition (ATCE) in Denver, CO. An AMD Opteron-based Portable Cluster featuring Windows HPC Server 2008 will be displayed in the Microsoft Booth (#755). This is the first Portable Cluster to take advantage of the newly available low-power Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ HE processor models which provide the increased performance-per-watt critical to HPC applications. Portable Clusters featuring Microsoft Windows HPC Server 2008 also boast a comprehensive set of deployment, administration, and monitoring tools that are easy to deploy, manage, and integrate within a client's existing infrastructure.
"Oil and gas technical professionals are flooded with new data that requires extensive and time-consuming analysis. High-performance computing addresses these challenges, allowing for better insight and decision-making in real-time," said Craig Hodges, U.S. energy and chemicals director for Microsoft. “Through the recently-launched Windows HPC Server 2008, these engineers now benefit from improved productivity of systems administration and cluster interoperability, rapid development of HPC applications and natural scalability from workstation to cluster.” Nor-Tech also has its own booth (#155) where they will be demonstrating how the Portable Cluster can operate as a fully sealed transit case unit, thanks to Nor-Tech's partnership with SprayCool, and their revolutionary liquid cooling technology. Nor-Tech's Ruggedized Sealed Portable Cluster is an ideal IT solution for extremely harsh environments where standard air-cooling isn't an option, such as those often encountered in the Oil & Gas industry. Ushering in a new era of onsite, high-performance computing, Portable Clusters by Nor-Tech are highly ruggedized and extremely mobile. The mobile supercomputers run cool, save energy and are able to operate up to 128 compute cores on two 120VAC 20-amp circuits.
About Nor-Tech Nor-tech has configured small and large HPC systems using a variety of operating systems and cluster management suites. Nor-Tech currently has deployed clusters for projects funded by DARPA, the National Institute of Health and the National Science Foundation.
