How to Choose the Right Storage Architecture for HPC and AI Workloads | Nor-Tech
Storage is one of the defining performance variables in HPC and AI infrastructure. Adding compute capacity delivers limited value if the storage subsystem cannot feed CPUs and GPUs at the rate applications require.
The right architecture starts with workload behavior. Traditional HPC environments may generate large sequential reads and writes, but AI training can involve massive datasets, checkpoint files and highly concurrent access from GPU nodes. Metadata-intensive workloads introduce yet another performance profile. Before selecting a storage platform, you should evaluate:
- I/O profile: Sequential versus random access, file sizes and read/write ratios
- Throughput and latency: Aggregate bandwidth requirements and sensitivity to storage response time
- Concurrency: Number of compute nodes accessing data simultaneously
- Capacity growth: Current requirements plus realistic 3-5 year expansion
- Data protection: Availability, redundancy, backup and recovery requirements
- Network architecture: Ethernet or InfiniBand bandwidth between compute and storage resources
These factors determine whether an architecture based on NAS, SAN, all-flash, distributed storage, parallel file systems or a combination will provide the best fit. Nor-Tech supports a broad range of enterprise and HPC storage architectures, including TrueNAS HA, NAS, iSCSI, NFS, SMB, FTP, Fibre Channel, S3, DAS, SAN and software-defined storage such as Linux MDADM and ZFS..
For GPU-intensive AI environments, architecture must be considered holistically. High-performance NVMe can reduce storage latency, but performance may still be constrained by network bandwidth, file-system configuration, or inefficient data movement. Compute, storage and networking therefore need to be engineered as one system.
Nor-Tech Executive Vice President Jeff Olson explained, “Storage performance can’t be evaluated in isolation. You can invest in the fastest storage available, but if the network, file system or compute environment creates a bottleneck, you won’t get the performance you paid for. We engineer the entire system around the workload so compute, storage and networking work together efficiently.”
This systems-level approach is especially important when deploying fully integrated HPC clusters. Nor-Tech engineers balance processors, accelerators, memory, networking, storage and software against actual workload requirements and validate the complete environment before deployment.
The best storage architecture is not necessarily the one with the highest individual specifications. It is the one engineered to keep the entire HPC or AI infrastructure operating efficiently—today and as workloads scale.
