Ubuntu is an open-source distro operating system that is based on the Linux kernel. It is the best choice for today’s demanding AI and ML applications. Since it requires no license fee, it is significantly more cost-effective than commercial alternatives and is very popular in the research/academic space. Because it is open source, Ubuntu’s code can be customized and modified.

MAAS (Metal as a Service) is another AI-ready open-source tool that helps users manage the physical HPC infrastructure with the same ease and flexibility as cloud-based virtual machines. Specifically, MAAS allows users to:

  • Discover, commission, and deploy physical servers
  • Dynamically re-allocate physical resources to match workload requirements
  • Retire servers when they are no longer needed, and make them available for new workloads as required

Together Ubuntu and MAAS offer the benefits of commercial versions without compromising performance. While both utilities can be installed on physical servers, the installation and deployment process does require engineering expertise. This is where Nor-Tech comes in.
