HPC clusters rarely lose performance because of a single obvious failure. More often, degradation develops incrementally as workloads, software, storage requirements and infrastructure evolve. The cluster may remain operational while job completion times increase, GPU or CPU utilization declines, or application performance becomes less predictable.

  • Thermal conditions, power limitations and component health

 

The objective should extend beyond restoring previous performance. Degradation can expose architectural constraints that were not apparent when the cluster was originally deployed. Workloads may have become more data intensive, GPU utilization may have increased, or storage and networking resources may no longer be appropriately balanced with compute capacity.
